Formerly known as the GSS regatta, this event is now the Summer Dinghy Regatta, hosted as a joint effort by the Royal Northern & Clyde Yacht Club and Helensburgh Sailing Club. This is always a popular event, and incorporates the Scottish Schools Sailing Association Championships. This year it is also the RYA Junior Zone Championships.

RYA Scottish Areas at Helensburgh

Alan Henderson

The RYA's Scottish Area Championship for juniors and youths is a must do for junior sailors, with a good performance a possible passport to Scottish or even GBR squad membership next winter. And so 38 Toppers, 19 Optimists, and a handicap youth fleet came to join battle on the Clyde at a Championship run jointly by the Royal Northern and Helensburgh clubs on June 24/25. In both of these main classes, there were regatta fleets for youngsters with less racing experience. Light breezes on the Saturday gave way to fresher winds on the Sunday, to give the older and bigger sailors a chance. That chance was taken by former Optimist sailor Lynn Crichton, who perked up considerably in the Sunday breezes with a win and a second place to clinch the Topper class on a tie break with Lorenzo Chiavarini. It was very tight at the front, with only one point separating three sailors, as Emma Wilkie took third. In the Optimists, Worlds team member Anna Burnett was pressed hard on her home waters by James Logan, with just a point between them after Saturday, but two wins on the Sunday for Burnett clinched that class, with Logan second and Shona Ross third. The Oppies also had a B fleet and a Regatta Fleet. Tom Kembley took the B fleet in style winning all five races, and Andrew Mitchell did the same in the Regatta fleet. Angus Gray-Stephens took the Topper Regatta fleet, with Rory Kilgore in second. The handicap fleet for youth boats was dominated by 420s, with Peter Irwin and David Kohler taking firm control with five wins, overcoming the challenge of Kiel Week returnees Bob Hyde and Jack Calvert.
