Scottish Traveller IV

Royal Northern & Clyde YC, Helensburgh SC

Scottish Juniors at Helensburgh

The Scottish Junior Travellers series moved back to the west coast this weekend (to the upper reaches of the Firth of Clyde) for the MacArthur Stanton Summer Regatta hosted jointly by Helensburgh Sailing Club and Royal Northern & Clyde Yacht Club.

The early arrivals on Saturday were greeted by a stiff NE breeze with overcast conditions and the alluring smell of fresh bacon rolls emanating from the club kitchen. The usual suspects in the Toppers and Optimist classes' ranks were swollen by a number of local entrants and joined on this occasion by a handful of 420's. The Race Officers got the series off on both courses, in a strengthening and slightly shifty Northerly breeze, with clean starts and close racing. As the day progressed the breeze stiffened to provide excellent conditions for all classes and at the close of the first day of the event the 420's were led by a clean sweep of bullets by Irwin and Kolher. The Topper Fleet was headed by Moray Clark whilst the Optimists found them selves in a 3-way tie involving Callum Airlie, Andrew McGowan and Ross Stanley-Whyte.

Sunday offered a significant change in the conditions: the sailors were greeted by a perfect reflection of the Roseneath peninsula in the glass calm waters and swarms of over energetic and hungry midges. Not good! However, by mid morning the pressure was starting to build from the south; the fleets were launched; and greeted on arrival in the sailing area by a building SW breeze and bright sunshine. Racing was soon underway with some interesting tussles for the overall places quickly becoming evident.

420s continued to be dominated by the well proven Irwin / Kholer combination, however, close racing for the minor places saw the new team of Anna Burnet and Shona Ross taking second spot. In the Toppers the lighter conditions suited Lorenzo Chiavarini of Tarbert Loch Fyne who popped out of the pack in his favourite conditions. However, never too far away, Moray Clark defended his overnight lead to take top spot from Lorenzo and the improving Amy Buchan. Local Helensburgh sailor Jennifer Abraham took top honours in the Topper Development fleet.

On the Optimist course, the wafting drones of a lone piper on Helensburgh pier and the rhythmic drumming of paddles on the water hailed the arrival of the PS Waverley on her 60th anniversary cruise. As she picked her way majestically through the Fleets she saluted the Optimists, also celebrating their 60th year in service. Meanwhile, back on the course the overall lead changed positions throughout the day as the key contenders traded the top slots in each race. Consistency from Callum Airlie won the day with the Border's sailor just creeping ahead of Ross Stanley-Whyte in the final standings. Ali Gray from Helensburgh won a close-fought regatta in the Optimist Regatta Fleet from Erin Kemsley of Clyde Cruising Club.

The overall MacArthur Stanton Trophy for the best performance was awarded to Topper salor Moray Clark of RNCYC, with Amy Buchan CCC picking up the top girl's trophy.

The youth classes, who are fully supported by RYA Scotland, move back to the east coast for the next traveller event, which includes the Scottish Optimist Grand Prix, Scottish Optimist Championship and Scottish Topper Championship at Dalgety Bay on 30 Jun/1Jul
